Our woodpecker is a yellow bellied sapsucker (thanks Mark), and appearantly it is "drilling" holes in the trees and sucking out the sap. Well, we have put a plastic owl in the tree in the backyard since that was the most damaged and I am going to keep an eye on the trees in the front.
